Heat wave8 places to stay cool this summer

Discover while staying cool

Before you set off to explore the Thionville region, the Tourist Office team has put together a list of the coolest places to stay this summer!

Going underground

In the Pays Thionvillois, even in scorching heat, it’s still possible to combine discovery and coolness. Go a few kilometers underground, where you’ll find the memory of the epic of the iron mines and the Maginot Line. Immerse yourself in the day-to-day life of the gueules jaunes and the French soldiers of the Maginot Line. Discover their tricks, their modernity and their know-how in these galleries and concrete bunkers, which emerge from the ground like burrows.

These sites are guaranteed to maintain a constant temperature of 12 degrees all year round. But beware of temperature variations! Don’t forget to bring a sweater or cardigan for your visit, even if it’s hot outside.

Bubbling in the shade at Parc Napoléon

Quite simply! With their vast expanses of woodland, parks are the perfect place to stay in the shade and (a little) out of the heat.

To help you beat this heatwave, here’s a list of municipal parks and gardens where you can find some cool shade. You can even enjoy an ice cream!

Forest walks

Summer is the perfect time to go hiking or walking on the many trails that dot the Pays Thionvillois. In hot weather, it’s best to adapt your itinerary and opt for shady paths, such as those in forests. Make the most of the temperature difference under the trees. We particularly recommend the Bois de Thionville trail, the Fort d’Illange trail or the Beerenweg trail, which allows you to discover the forestry, fauna and flora of the undergrowth.

Bike routes

Put your feet in the water

A true oasis of freshness in the heart of nature, the Nautic’Ham leisure park is a must-see. There’s plenty to choose from! Little sailors can try their hand at sailing, while the more sporty can let off steam on a jet-ski. And what better way to round off the day than with a sunsetboat trip?

Canoeing, kayaking, rowing, sailing, waterskiing, wakeboarding, wakesurfing, etc., the sports clubs and associations of the Pays Thionvillois guarantee thrills, relaxation and sport. There’s something for everyone!

Quench your thirst on the terrace

During heat waves, it’s important to stay hydrated. There’s nothing like a drink on a terrace with friends to cool down. In moderation, of course! In the heart of the city center on the terraces of Place Anne Grommerch, in the cosy atmosphere of the bar Le Beffroi or on the banks of the Moselle during Rive and Cœur de Ville en Fête. What are your top addresses for this summer? We’ll give you some ideas.

Relax at the spa

Ready to put on your bathrobe? Head for the Gemology Spa at Domaine de la Klauss. A prestigious French brand with which Alexandre Keff has chosen to collaborate. Gemology is renowned for its treatment rituals using precious and semi-precious stones, as well as its range of mineral cosmetics.
Here too, the setting is an invitation toescape! The sensory pool, heated to 34°c, is the perfect place to slip into.
What more could you ask for, under stone arches overlooking the Montenach hills?

A moment of relaxation

Take to the cinema

Another way to beat the heat? Take refuge in a movie theater and enjoy the air-conditioning for the duration of a good film. Whether it’s an American blockbuster, an arthouse film or a cartoon, the choice is yours. After a few stunts, the heat wave is already forgotten!

You can buy reduced-rate tickets for the Kinépolis cinema directly from the Tourist Office, and find out more about the program at the La Scala city-center cinema.

Bathing without hesitation

Feel like taking the plunge? There are many places to swim in the natural environment of the Grand Est region. You can dive in without hesitation and enjoy 88 controlled sites!

In Luxembourg, just a 30-minute drive from Thionville, you’ll find Lake Remerschen. Ponds and a large beach are available to visitors, as well as a paddling pool for children, volleyball courts, a boules pitch and paddle tennis.
