Concert Rebellion

Following three programs exploring folk music and its relationship with art music in Ireland, Scotland, Sweden, and Norway, *The Curious Bards* now examines these close connections within the work of one of the greatest English composers of the 17th century: Henry Purcell. A review of his secular musical output makes it clear that he was undoubtedly familiar with the folk music of his time. These influences are evident in his talent for writing dance pieces, whether for the theater (“incidental music”) or for opera. Certain arias, as well as numerous “songs,” are no exception to this folk influence, sung by the guest mezzo-soprano for the occasion, Ilektra Platiopoulou. By taking this slight detour toward art music, The Curious Bards sheds a completely new light on a multifaceted composer, who is better known today for his operas and semi-operas than for his undeniable genius in popular music.
