Anti-ableism and Quadriplegic Gestures
Hailing from the South of quadriplegia, I’ll take you on a tour of a few of its neighborhoods. And then me and all my little voices get all tangled up and try to figure it out: What is ableism? Does it just affect people with unusual bodies or weird faces, or is it something that affects everyone? Where does it come from? How does it develop? A family argument between me and myself—you’re welcome to join in!

“Deconstructing Ableism,” the talk
This is a stage performance, a talk with lots of movement. It’s about sharing a personal experience, a journey, and a growing awareness of the issues surrounding disability and the place of people who live with it.
The talk centers on the concept of ableism—the systemic discrimination and oppression of those who do not conform to the “able” norm.
Pierre discovers the term, the word and its meaning, the reality it describes, and the questions it raises.
The discussion touches on self-image, vulnerability, norms and margins, and mutual support.
He takes the time to listen to the different voices resonating within himself and to bring their dialogue to life before us.
He shares with us the thoughts and writings of various authors from the disability community, drawing on the perspectives of anthropologists, biologists, poets, and activists.
